Siân Jones – Producer & Theatremaker

Silence

I became part of the producing team for the South-West leg of this storytelling tour. Told by UK Young Storyteller of 2007 Rachel Rose Reid, the tale was originally written in the early 13th Century by Heldris of Cornwall, before being lost for 700 years. When it was rediscovered in 1911, it’s plot concerning women’s rights and gender fluidity was much too controversial for a country in the throes of suffrage, so the piece was hidden again.

Rachel discovered this story several years ago, and has broken into a three-part epic containing the original story, as well as it’s unfortunate history and how it has helped her on her own mental health journey. 2018 saw her bring the story back to it’s homeland in the South West for an extensive tour covering from Bristol to the depths of Cornwall. I became the local producer with on-the-ground knowledge heading up communications with venues and PR for the Bristol performance, as well as national PR and social media for the overall tour.

In February 2019, I was contacted again by Rachel to help promote a performance of Part 2 of Silence at Arnolfini. It has been great working with the Silence team again to continue giving voice to this lost epic!
